Tuesday’s Election Watch: Minnesota and Georgia Special Elections

December 4, 2011

By Kathy Groob, Publisher ElectWomen Magazine – Tuesday December 6th is an important day for women candidates in Minnesota and Georgia.  A special election will be held in Minnesota for Senate District 59 and House District 61B.  The winners of Tuesday’s primaries in Minnesota will compete in the special general election on January 10, 2012.

A runoff election for mayor will be held in Savannah Georgia.  Edna Jackson is heavily favored, as she has served as alderman and mayor pro tem of the city council.  Jackson has received several key endorsements for Tuesday’s election.  If elected, Jackson would become the first African American woman to serve as Savannah’s mayor.

Running for Minnesota’s House of Representatives in a potentially historic election, Susan Allen would become the first Native American woman to ever serve in the Minnesota State Legislature.  An attorney and advocate for economic and social justice, Allen grew up in poverty and with the help of her family, completed college and law school.  She is a Lakota, Dakota and Anishinabe Native American.

In her first race for public office, Kari Dziedzic is running for Minnesota’s District 59.  Dziedzic has worked in the Hennepin County Attorney’s office and is a community activist and volunteer. Dziedzic has picked up the support of EMILY’S List and the Minneapolis Building & Construction Trades Council.

Minnesota’s Women Winning, the progressive, pro-choice group that encourages and supports women candidates has endorsed both Susan Allen and Kari Dziedzic.
