Janice Hahn Sworn In to House of Representatives
July 19, 2011
New York Times – House Speaker John Boehner conducted a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday for Representative Janice Hahn, with her daughter, Kathy Yates, and her grandchildren Josiah Yates, 5, and Brooklyn Yates, 6.
The House of Representatives welcomed its 433rd member on Tuesday when Janice Hahn was sworn in, one week after her special election victory to replace former Representative Jane Harman in California’s 36th Congressional District.
Wearing a bright blue suit, Ms. Hahn, whose family has a long record of public service in Southern California, took her oath just before the House began a sometimes raucous floor fight over how to resolve the nation’s debt issues. “Americans are counting on us now more than ever to solve their problems, and working together with courage and in good faith, I believe we can and we will,” Ms. Hahn said in brief remarks to the chamber after being sworn in.
Ms. Hahn, a Democrat whose mother died suddenly the day before she was elected, beat Craig Huey, a Republican businessman, 55 percent to 45 percent on July 12, to secure the Democrat-leaning seat representing Los Angeles County. Ms. Harman resigned earlier this year to work for a think tank.
Ms. Hahn’s seating puts the chamber balance at 240 Republicans and 193 Democrats, with two vacancies that will be filled later with special elections.
