Over 1,200 Minnesota men and women came together for for lunch on Monday, June 15th for the annual fundraiser sponsored by Womenwinning – the Minnesota Women’s Campaign Fund.  Multi-generations came together – mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters and friends to hear the message that feminist movement leader Gloria Steinem will deliver—Share the Torch –Generations of Women Winning.

The women’s movement is not more than half way through, regardless of those who say it isn’t necessary any more, Gloria Steinem told more than 1200 women and men attending the sold-out annual luncheon for womenwinning:  Minnesota Women’s Campaign Fund.  “We are still striving for legal and social equality,” she said. “We have convinced the world that women can do what men can do, but we have not convinced them that men can do what women can do.  We still have two separate roles for women and men.We need to understand the depth of discrimination and how the political system can change it.”
The luncheon is seen as the largest non-partisan political gathering in Minnesota.

Founded in 1982, womenwinning is non-partisan organization dedicated to helping pro-choice women become elected to local, state and federal public office.  The organization operates as both a non-profit dedicated to providing education and information to women candidates as well as a PAC (political action committee) that contributes and supports endorsed candidates.  Minnesota currently boasts 35% of the elected state legislators are women and they have one female U.S. Senator – Amy Klobuchar.  Minnesota ranks among the highest level of female elected officials in the United States.

This event is held every year at the historic Milwaukee Depot in downtown  Minneapolis.  The program began with a procession of pro-choice women who were elected in part because of the support they received from womenwinning.  To make a reservation, call 651-251-0718.  For more information about the Minnesota Women’s Campaign Fund, visit: http://www.womenwinning.org/.
