Jack Conway announces bid for Kentucky governor; selects woman legislator as running mate

BY SAM YOUNGMAN, Herald-Leader – Attorney General Jack Conway discusses his run for Governor with Herald-Leader reporter Sam Youngman and columnist Larry Dale Keeling after a video announcing his candidacy was released earlier in the day.
Attorney General Jack Conway made it official Tuesday morning, telling supporters in an online video that he is running for governor in 2015.
Conway has selected state Rep. Sannie Overly of Paris, the House Democratic Caucus chairwoman, as his running mate.
Conway laid out a broad campaign platform in his five-minute video, saying he will focus on education and jobs.
“I believe in Kentucky, our people,” Conway said in the video. “And I believe that together, we can build a future of opportunity we can all be proud of. For that reason, I’m announcing I’m a candidate for governor. It’s a job I’m prepared to do.”
Conway said he would focus on early childhood education, restoring budget cuts to K-12 and reigning in the costs of higher education.
“Education and jobs go hand in hand, and jobs will be our highest priority,” Conway said.
Overly, who also is featured in the video, was the first woman elected to a leadership role in the House Democratic caucus, Conway said, calling the representative “an original Kentucky woman.”
Conway, who was first elected attorney general in 2007, is well known statewide after winning two races for attorney general and losing a high-profile race in 2010 against U.S. Sen. Rand Paul.
“I realize that one of the silver linings of having $30 million spent against you in a relatively short political career is that everybody knows your name,” Conway told the Herald-Leader in January. “I’m not trying to say it in a vain way, but name ID is important. I think I sit in a strong position. I think there’s a good chance I would win.”
