2014 Spotlight: MASS Auditor Suzanne Bump

May 30, 2013

An advocate for more women in public office, Massachusetts Auditor Suzanne Bump will fight for her own reelection next year or maybe even a higher office.  Auditor Bump was elected in 2010 as the state’s first female auditor, one of 14 female state auditors in the United States and only one of four who have actually been elected (the rest were appointed to office). Bump served as a state representative and cabinet member before her run for auditor in 2010, stepping down as a cabinet secretary to Governor Deval Patrick in order to run.

Suzanne Bump was honored by the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus for her efforts to inspire and assist women in attaining leadership positions in government. “While I was in office, our numbers in the House and Senate continued to climb. It made some people think that continued gains were inevitable,” said Auditor Bump during her acceptance speech.  “Until the last of our sisters is safe, educated, and compensated, our work will not be finished. So, I know what I need to do, and that is to redouble my efforts to elect other women to office. And to do that, I will continue to count on the women at the caucus to help me.”

Just this week it was announced that Auditor Bump is being named Democrat of the Year by the Springfield Democratic City Committee. “As Democrats from each of the city’s eight wards are noted for their efforts, Bump, a Great Barrington resident, will be named the Edward P. Boland Democrat of the Year. Under Bump, state auditors have exposed waste and the misuse of public money in Massachusetts. On Tuesday, her office released a report concluding that the Department of Transitional Assistance had paid a total of $2.39 million in benefitsto more than 1,100 dead recipients,” according to the Massachusetts Republican newspaper.
