Regina Quinn Running to Become Jackson’s First Female Mayor

March 31, 2013

Clarion Ledger – Jackson Mississippi attorney Regina Quinn, Democrat, announced that she’ll run for mayor of Jackson. If she wins, Quinn would be the first-ever female mayor in the city’s 190-year history. “I am convinced that Jackson is tired of the status quo,” Quinn says in a letter on her campaign site. “This city is ready to move in a new direction.”

Six Democratic candidates have entered the race for mayor and the primary will be held on May 7, 2013.

She lists infrastructure, crime and economic development as her top campaign issues. “After hearing that the city was losing Sam’s Club, Sears, Haverty’s and Puckett Machinery, Candidate Quinn decided it was time to officially announce that she is in fact running to become Jackson’s first female mayor,” wrote campaign spokeswoman Toni Johnson in a press release. “From day one as mayor, Regina Quinn will begin discussions with existing businesses to stop the loss of jobs. Moreover, Ms. Quinn will embark upon a serious campaign to recruit more businesses (and jobs) to come to Jackson.”

Quinn’s campaign has been gathering steam for months now, so her announcement is something of a formality to rally supporters rather than a surprise statement of intent. She joins a crowded field that includes the sitting mayor, two city councilmen and a Jackson business leader among other lesser-knowns.

Quinn most recently held the post of general counsel for JSU. She also spent time at the Attorney General’s Office, and has worked as a land developer, according to her campaign site.
