(CNN) – Candy Crowley, CNN’s chief political correspondent and host of “State of the Union,” will be the first woman in 20 years to moderate a general election presidential debate, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.

Crowley will host the second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on October 16 in Hempsted, New York, at Hoftsra University.

The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.

In July Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.

Other debate moderators announced Monday included PBS’ Jim Lehrer, who will host the October 3 debate in Denver, and CBS’ Bob Schieffer, who will host an October 22 debate in Boca Raton, Florida.

Martha Raddatz of ABC will host the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan on October 11 in Danville, Kentucky.

“State of the Union” airs Sundays on CNN at 9 a.m. ET and noon.
