Texas Candidate Ann Johnson Leads Opponent in Fundraising
July 21, 2012
(Houston, TX) – Democrat Ann Johnson, candidate for the Texas House of Representatives for District 134 in Houston, announced today that her campaign raised $161,389.66 in the first reporting period from more than 450 donors. That’s more than twice the funds and twice as many donors as her opponent.
Johnson also reported $138,837.46 in cash on hand, almost $40,000 more than her opponent.
Johnson was grateful but not surprised by her strong support:
“I am very humbled that so many people have contributed to the campaign and that they have shown their faith in me as a candidate”, said Johnson.
“Everywhere I go people light up when I talk about taking Texas from worst to first in education and access to health care. The people in my district are worried about the very real possibility that our next generation of Texans will be less educated, less employable and less prosperous than we are.”
Robert Jones is Executive Director of Annie’s List, an organization that supports women running for state offices in Texas.
“These numbers are just the latest evidence that Ann Johnson is well positioned to win in November,” said Jones. “The voters in this district are fiercely independent and care deeply about education. Living minutes away from the Texas Medical Center, they’re passionate about health care as well. Ann Johnson will be a 100% champion for education and health care in the legislature.”
“Ann Johnson’s priorities – educational opportunity, access to health care, a sustainable economic future for Texas families – are the priorities of the families in this district,” said Ellen Cohen, who represented the district from 2007-2011 in the legislature and continues to represent many of the same residents on the Houston City Council.
“Of all the states in America, Texas has the lowest percentage of adults with a high school diploma and the highest percentage of children without health insurance,” Johnson said. “I’m running to put Texas on a different path.”
