June 4, 2012

Today Minnesota’s largest women’s PAC welcomes over 1,200 guests to The Depot downtown Minneapolis

Saint Paul, MN — Today, Monday, June 4th, Women Winning welcomes Anita Hill to keynote its Annual Luncheon. Over 1,200 women and men will gather at The Depot downtown Minneapolis to support 30 years of Women Winning’s work to recruit, train and elect pro-choice women to all levels of public office in Minnesota.

WHO: Women Winning WHAT: 30th Anniversary Annual Event – featuring Anita Hill WHEN: Monday, June 4th at 11:30 a.m. WHERE: The Depot downtown Minneapolis

The event speaking program will also include Governor Mark Dayton, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Senator Al Franken, and Congresswoman Betty McCollum.

This year women are poised to make major political gains as the rhetoric around the War on Women has galvanized women across the nation. Twenty-years ago, following the uproar around Anita Hill’s treatment by the all-male U.S. Senate Judiciary committee, women saw unprecedented electoral gains.

“This is a critical election year for women, and we couldn’t have a more fitting keynote speaker,” said Lauren Beecham, Executive Director of Women Winning. “Anita Hill’s courageous testimony 20 years ago inspired a generation of women to step up and get involved. We believe this year, following the War on Women, individuals better understand the importance of electing pro-choice women to office. This is our year and Women Winning is poised to help elect more pro-choice women than ever before.”

In 2012, Women Winning expanded its political program, recruiting and endorsing more women candidates than ever before. Last week, the organization rolled out its 2012 legislative candidate class including both Women Winning endorsed candidates and strong, pro-choice incumbents running in metro, suburban and rural districts. Women Winning’s endorsement comes with significant power. Last year alone, Women Winning raised more than half a million dollars in direct contributions and candidate support. In the six legislative special elections that were held within the last year, Women Winning endorsed in five and won all five (Rep. Carly Melin, Sen. Mary Jo McGuire, Sen. Chris Eaton, Sen. Kari Dziedzic, and Rep. Susan Allen).
