Making History: Indiana State House Recognizes First Female African-Am.Woman Mayor in Indiana

Indiana -Representatives Vernon Smith and Charlie Brown recognized Karen Freeman-Wilson as the first female African American mayor in the State of Indiana with a resolution presented today in the Indiana State House of Representatives.  Freeman-Wilson won her election this past November and became the first female mayor of Gary Indiana. Before November’s election, only 11 of Indiana’s 119 cities had female mayors.

Freeman-Wilson’s election came on her third try for the office. She also ran for Gary mayor in 2003 and 2007.
