Oklahoma’s Traci Barnes; Fired Up and Running for State House

January 23, 2012

By Kathy Groob, Publisher ElectWomen Magazine – With a campaign video that begins with the energetic tunes from the musical Oklahoma, Traci Barnes has thrown her hat into the right to run for Oklahoma’s House District 3. She’s kicked off her campaign with photos of supporters wearing Traci “big girl panties” t-shirts and social media messaging that is catching attention.

When Traci Barnes lost the primary by just 134 votes for the same House seat in 2010, she continued to follow the election and believed that her day would come.  She’s back in the race in 2012, with more experience, good support and resources she believes will carry her to victory.  “I feel more comfortable and confident that I know what I’m doing,” says Traci Barnes.

Traci has been a long-time community activist and businesswoman, managing hotels in Poteau Oklahoma for 22 years.  She has received numerous business and civic awards.  The Poteau Chamber of Commerce named Traci Poteau’s Woman of the Year in 2006.

Traci’s platform includes protecting water rights that are critical to her community.  “Our state faces important water issues, selling our water out of state is a problem for our area,” says Barnes. “I would like to see us have a representative that is from the area on the Oklahoma water resource board.  We have been faced with severe drought and this is a serious concern for our district.”

Preparing for the upcoming election was important to Traci, so she completed the Democracy for America training program.  There has never been a woman represent the Little Dixie area of Oklahoma’s House District 3.  She’s a conservative Democrat, a member of the NRA and serves on the local Chamber of Commerce promoting her community through tourism and economic development.
