Progressive Missouri Legislator Leads Effort to Reach Out to Progressive Women

October 20, 2011

By Kathy Groob, Publisher of ElectWomen Magazine – A Missouri state representative hopes to engage more progressive women in the political process and recruit candidates through her Progress Woman movement.  Representative Stacey Newman says, “Women’s issues are more than just about wedge issues like abortion.  We care about important issues like pay equity, the economy, issues facing single moms, and women being hurt because of lack of jobs.  These are the women’s issues we will be focused on.”

Progress Women is beginning as a social media venture and will use progressive sites to help spread the word.  “We will be looking for Missouri centric stories like equal pay that we can bring people together around and engage women into the process,” says Newman.

Stacey Newman is the chair of the House Progressive Caucus, which is the largest Democratic caucus in Missouri’s legislature.  “It’s up to us progressive, Democratic women to speak up and be heard,” says Newman.  “I have consistently been a champion of women’s issues – equality, domestic violence and reproductive rights.”

Progress Women will focus on a communications strategy for progressive women to engage them in voting and recruiting women candidates.  “We need to motivate women in office now to make sure they’ve identified a replacement when their term ends,” says Newman.
