Finding the right message and boiling it down to a three-word slogan is no longer a difficult early campaign task. The website Winyourcampaign.com offers lists of free slogan ideas with just a click of a mouse. Categories of slogans include themes like change/results; experience/trust; town/community; choice/vote/elect and school/law enforcement.
I credit the slogan I used in my first city council race for my success in coming in second in a field of 15 for eight seats. My city council slogan was First, She Listens. It was on everything – my signs, stickers and handouts. Long after the campaign was over, I still received calls from constituents asking if I was the “lady who listened.”
Slogans matter; especially in small races where there are fewer funds to get your message out. Early polling is best to help you settle on a great theme, but without that, use your best judgment, bounce it off some of your supporters, and go with a strong message and slogan – and stick with it!
