Special Election Watch: Janice Hahn Picks Up Endorsements

June 1, 2011

BROWN, NEWSOM ENDORSE JANICE HAHN FOR CONGRESS – Democratic leaders unite to support Hahn, echo call for green jobs, clean energy, and ending wars abroad.

Janice Hahn announced a bevy of endorsements from Democratic luminaries today, demonstrating broad party unity and underscoring her agenda to create green jobs and focus on clean energy in the 36th Congressional District.

Governor Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Steny Hoyer, Congresswoman Judy Chu, Congressman Henry Waxman, Congressman Howard Berman, DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, and the California Democratic Party joined an already long list of Democratic powerhouses backing Hahn.

“Janice Hahn is a fighter with a track record of helping Californians and getting things done,” said Governor Jerry Brown. “I want Janice to continue that work in Congress.”

“What’s remarkable about Janice is that she listens to people, she responds, and she gets results,” said Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom.  “That’s what she did for her constituents when they were concerned about pollution and jobs, and it’s what she will do for us when she is in Congress.”

In May, Hahn finished first in the open primary for the 36th Congressional District, winning nearly 25% of the vote after a tough campaign featuring 16 candidates.  She has the backing of a united Democratic Party as she faces Tea Party darling Craig Huey in a July 12 runoff.

Brown, Newsom and the other Democratic leaders said Hahn’s track record as councilwoman representing neighborhoods near the Port of Los Angeles, demonstrates she has the guts, tenacity, and skill to deliver for the district.  They also touted her plan to create green jobs, and praised her support for ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hahn recently proposed a plan to create 25,000 green jobs in the 36th district by investing in high-tech, clean energy technologies. She points to new startup businesses like Advanced Algae Solutions in San Pedro, which makes clean biodiesel from natural algae, as industry models.  Her plan is available online at http://janicehahn.com/issues/green-jobs-plan/.

The latest round of endorsements adds to an impressive roster of leading Democrats supporting Hahn, including:  United States Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congressman and Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus Xavier Becerra, Congresswoman Karen Bass, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, Congresswoman Laura Richardson, Congressman John Garamendi, former Congresswoman Diane Watson, former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez, State Senator Ted Lieu, State Assemblymember Warren Furutani, and California State Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal.

The special election for California’s 36th Congressional District is July 12, 2011.
