ElectWomen Magazine’s Women to Watch on Election Night

There are several historic and significant races involving women on Election Day, November 2nd. Although we applaud all women who have taken the challenge and run for office, we in particular will be spotlighting  results in the following races:

Barbara Boxer Senator Boxer is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate in California. She is the first female chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee and she also chairs the Senate Select Committee on Ethics making her the only sitting senator to hold two Committee Chairmanships.  (Democrat)

Meg Whitman is running on the Republican ticket for Governor in California. She has held key executive positions in Disney, Stride Rite, FTD, and Hasbro.  Meg was the CEO of ebay where she is recognized for her efforts in building the company during the dotcom boom. (Republican)

Carly Fiorina is the Republican candidate running against Barbara Boxer in California’s Senate race.  She is best known as the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard Company.  Carly is the first, and to date, the only woman to lead a Fortune 20 company. (Republican)

Jan Brewer Republican Governor Jan Brewer is running for re-election in Arizona.  Brewer previously held offices in the State Senate as well as at the state level, a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. (Republican)

Nikki Haley is running for Governor in South Carolina.  Nikki is currently a member of South Carolina’s House of Representatives.  She is running on the Republican ticket and is a supporter of the Tea Party movement. (Republican)

Patty Murray Senator Murray has held office in the US senate since 1992.  She serves on the Appropriations, Budget, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), Veterans’ Affairs, and Rules and Administration Committees.  She chairs the Transportation-Housing Subcommittee and Employment Workplace and Safety Subcommittee on the Appropriations and HELP Committees. (Democrat)

Linda McMahon is running for U.S. Senate in Connecticut, this is her first time running for public office.  She was formerly the CEO of the World Wrestling Entertainment. (Republican)

Kirsten Gillibrand is the Democratic Senator from New York running for re-election.  Kirsten was appointed to the U.S. Senate in January 2009 to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s seat. (Democrat)

Blanche Lincoln is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Arkansas.  Blanche was the youngest woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998 at age 38.  (Democrat)

Sharron Angle is running for US Senate in Nevada on the Republican ticket against Harry Reid.  She has previously held office in the State House of Representative in Nevada and is a public school teacher. (Republican)

Blanche Lincoln is the Senior Democratic Senator representing Arkansas.  She is the chairperson of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, the first Arkansan to lead the Committee in its 184-year history.  (Democrat)

Diane Denish is currently the Lt. Governor of New Mexico and is running to become the state’s first female governor.  (Democrat)

Susana Martinez is a District Attorney who is running to become the first female governor of New Mexico.  (Republican)

Alex Sink is a businesswoman who became Florida’s elected CFO in 2006 and is now running to become the first female governor of Florida.  (Democrat)

Lisa Murkowski lost her primary re-election bid for the U.S. and now running as a write-in independent on the ticket for the November general election.  (Independent)

Terri Sewell is running for Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District and would be the first Africa-American woman from Alabama to be elected to Congress. (Democrat)

Jari Askins is currently serving as the Oklahoma Lt. Governor and is running to become the state’s first female governor.  (Democrat)

Mary Fallin is a member of Congress and former Lt. Governor and is running to become the first female governor from the state of Oklahoma. (Republican)
