Former Investigative Reporter Vows to Bring Watchdog Attitude to Council Chambers
by Kathy Groob, Publisher ElectWomen Magazine
When former WCPO, I-team investigative reporter Laure Quinlivan looked over the political landscape in Cincinnati, she believed she could do better. Throughout her media career, when Laure saw waste or abuse in government, she shined a spotlight on it. Democrat Quinlivan is vowing to do the same thing for the citizens of Cincinnati. “I will stand up for taxpayers and average citizens of Cincinnati, and I will get things done,” says Quinlivan on her website.
Quinlivan is running in a crowded field of 20 candidates for Cincinnati City Council that includes 12 challengers and eight incumbents. Nine will be elected on November 3, 2009.
At a recent campaign fundraising event, Laure Quinlivan told the story of how she first became involved in politics while she was in college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her roommate was Maria Cantwell, now a U.S. Senator from Washington. Together they became active in college Democratic organizations and campaigned for President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Senator Cantwell flew into Cincinnati for the fundraiser at the home of Tom and Cathy Crain to help support her friend.
Quinlivan is endorsed by Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper who describes her as “tenacious and will be well prepared to watch over the city’s tax dollars.”
Laure has also picked up the endorsement of Mayor Mark Mallory who pronounced that he “needs her on his team.” Both Mallory and Pepper attended the fundraiser where Senator Cantwell described the long-time relationship she’s had with Laure and how thrilled she is that Laure is running for public office.
Quinlivan is using her media skills in the campaign by telling her story and her platform for the City in a well-put-together video. She uses the video at fundraisers and it appears on her website. To view the video, click here: http://www.lqreportingtoyou.com/index.php?page=videos.
