Ohio Woman Enters Race for U.S. Senate
February 18, 2009
A top Democratic Ohio State official Tuesday threw her hat into the ring in the race to fill retiring U.S. Sen. George Voinovich’s seat in 2010.
Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner made her candidacy official in an online announcement and through a new website at jenniferbrunner.com.
Brunner will face fellow Democrat Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher in a primary on May 4, 2010 as Fisher announced his candidacy at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon, said Chris Redfern, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party.
On the other side of the aisle, former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman made his candidacy official for Voinovich’s soon-to-be vacant seat earlier this year.
Republican Voinovich, a former Cleveland mayor who served as Ohio governor through much of the 1990s, got the race started when he announced Jan. 12 that he’ll retire instead of seeking a third Senate term next year.
