Meet North Carolina’s First Woman Governor, Beverly Perdue

North Carolina elected Beverly Perdue (D) as its first female governor on November 4th, 2008. A former hospital administrator, Beverly entered politics in 1986 when she was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives. After serving two terms in the House, Beverly was elected to the state Senate and then Lt. Governor in 2000.
Beverly Perdue smashed fundraising records for women by raising $15 million for her general election campaign for governor. During her 25 years as an elected official, Beverly was a strong advocate for teacher, children’s health care and the environment.
