Candidate Interview: New Ohio State Legislator Connie Pillich
February 23, 2009
ElectWomen.com contributor Vicki Prichard sat down in a television interview for Intercommunity Cable’s Community Report with Ohio’s new State Representative Connie Pillich. Pillich was elected in November 2008 and has just begun her service to Ohio’s 28th House District. Watch Vicki’s interview with Connie Pillich:
Pillich is an Air Force veteran, attorney, mom, and small business owner who resides in Montgomery, a northern Cincinnati suburb. She ran in 2008 for Ohio State House representative in the 28th House District, which represents Cincinnati’s northern suburbs.
Connie was drawn to public service to be a problem solver. She represents an extremely diverse district and her priorities include veterans and economic issues. She is actively engaged in regular coffee house discussions with her constituents so that they can express what’s on their minds.
Connie described her experience as a first time candidate as a learning experience and is committed to helping bring more women into the political arena. In Ohio’s House of Representatives, just 21 of the members are women out of 99. “We need to make sure more women are represented in the legislature; women add a lot and need to bring their voices to the table, more diversity as well,” said Pillich.
Being a first time candidate, Pillich had no prior experience in politics or campaigns. She had several mentors but they were very busy so Connie attended campaign school and read books to get ready to run. She describes the biggest challenge that she had not anticipated was the physical demand of the campaign. “Going door to door, being on your feet 14 hours a day, campaign appearances, were the hardest things to get used to,” said Pillich.
